Vintage and Woody Competition 3rd July

We have decided that the weather should be suitable on Sunday 3rd July. Bring your model and be ready for the first round to start at 10am. The format will be decided on the day depending on the weather. If you know where the frequency boad is, we will need it, so either bring it or contact someone who can. If any club member or interested party reading this message did not get an email from me on the same subject, please contact me with your email address because certainly some on the list I had bounced back.
Paul

The competition is now over and I think it was enjoyed by all. In the vintage competition, John Quigley won, Basil Healy came second and Bruce Abell third. There was a fair bit of carnage amongst these planes and I hope they all manage to get repaired because these are interesting models from the golden age of model aircraft.
Steve Truscott won the Woody Cometition after two fly off rounds. Paul Gibson came second and John Tidey third.
Here are some photos of the more interesting planes:

NACA Vintage Glider Contest

This is short notice but a few circumstances have come together that I hope will be beneficial to Vintage Gliding.

Saturday 21st May I was talking to Basil H and in discussion he advised me that there did not seem to be an earlier date than November to schedule a Vintage glider comp.

This is intended to supplement Muswellbrook and in no way detract from their efforts.

Sunday 22nd May I was talking to Brian Lindsay and he told me that the NACA club had a set of trophies left over from last years RES contest and what could we do about them.

We could not come up with too many RES models.

Brian is doing his best to generate enthusiasm into NSW gliding. I thought it would be easier to get 5 Vintage gliders than 5 RES gliders.

Brian liked the idea and so I am gathering “starters” and Brian will look at the contest details and weather. Brian will probably be the CD.

It will be towards the end of June next at SALT ASH DROP ZONE. I did indicate it was short notice.

We have yet to work out some details. Advertising will be on the NET somewhere and Brian will fix that detail and we will email those details as soon as we know them.

It will be on even if it just Basil myself and one other.

NACA does not have any facilities on the field. So bring you own or there are some “restaurants” near by for a gastronomic experience.

Please pass this invitation to any Vintage Glider Guiders that I have missed.

See the related post below for details.

Hope to see a good roll up. Cheers Brian & John

2010 Open Glider Competition

The Salt Ash Open has finished for the second year. We had a small field of entrants but they came from as far away as Armidale and Woolongong. We had 12 entries altogether but John Quigly had his turnround pull out on the first round which lead to damage to his model, so he had to retire. We ended up with 8 entries in open class and 6 in 2m class because some people chose to enter both classes. The weather was windy at first but it backed off in the middle of the afternoon only to strengthen again towards evening. We had about 1/2hr missed for rain squalls, which were all round the area but did not often hit us. Everyone flew 5 rounds from the start at 12.30pm to the finish at 5.30pm. Alan Lowe and Jack Murphy were outstanding in Open, both putting in some wonderful flights in the better than expected conditions. The were both flying Aspires, which seem really good aircraft, especially at landing. Owen Piercy, flying his own designed and built plane was also magnificent in the 2m but everyone flew well and there were no incidents. Enough results were obtained to split up the field for Sunday into division 1 and 2. Unfortunately our only NACA club member to fly,John Rawlins had family commitments on Sunday. A shame because he flew really well and did some very nice landings. He would have been in division 1 for Sunday.
Sunday dawned wet and windy but not deterered, the fliers all turned up again with the exception of John as mentioned above. Marc Ceo even came back from Sydney for the second day.
The weather was much more difficult and few full time flights were see. There were however some marvellous bits of flying. To give an example was Don Farrar's soaring at a very low height in thermal/slope lift coming off the bushes on the western boundary and Alan Lowe's last flight of 9.57 and 95 landing points. This was not quite enough to wrest first place in Open Div 1 from Don Farrar with Jack Murphy coming third. In Open Div 2 Hutton Oddy lead the way with both his home made and commercial Supras, Fred Lodden came second flying his Furio and Geoff Hungerford thought that discretion was the better part of valour and left his model in its box and came third.
The 2 m models had a hard time of it but Owen Piercy's model was up to the conditions, as was his flying and he won Div. 1 followed by Fred and Don. In Division 2 it was the triumph of experience as Max Stone won with Les Morris and Marc Ceo making up second and third places.
Everyone enjoyed themselves in a spirit of comradeship and fun. If you did not come it was a shame because we triumphed over the weather and really enjoyed ourselves.

Claytons Glider Comp - third round

The third round was held yesterday 28/2/2010 in hotish conditions. Unfortunately some foolish person believed the forecast and set up the winch line facing into the expected NE wind, which only came near the end of the comp, so we had down wind launches to contend with for most of the comp - sorry!
There were a few planes lost into the bush but all were retrieved I think. Launching discipline was better than previously, a few crossed lines but not too bad. Only 9 members contended this round, which was a pity because despite the poor launches those who went for the longer flights mostly made them. James Cameron came fith - a very good result - congratulations James. Running the competition in 1/2 hr time slots worked well with only a few over runs which did not cause any bother.
The results were:
1) Paul Gibson 1200 pts
2) John Tidey 1186 pts
3) Col Armitage 1148 pts
4) Richard Aurich 996 pts
5) James Cameron 948 pts
6) John Rawlins 941 pts
7) Ron Gett 230 pts
8) Dennis Rogers 223 pts

Thanks to all those who took part

Electric competition - set of foamy glider rules proposed by Athol Hutchinson

1) ARF's as agreed by club, CD, Committe whatever. Any modes to be declared (eg hi-vis paint job, minor strengthening). No aerodynamic refinements allowed.
2) Battery to be no more than that supplied with the model. Battery to be checked and sealed by the CD before any flying starts and batteries may not then be removed or recharged until the end of the comp. Seal can be a strip of tape across the battery connector, signed by CD.
3) Number and required flight time of rounds to be clearly stated before flying (suggest 3 with CD's discretion if necessary). All rounds closed (ie start and finish on CD's signal). Rounds may be broken into heats if the number of competitors justify it.
4) No relaunches. If a competitor cannot complete a flight as specified below his score for that round will be flight time only, up to not more than 75% of a max (% may be varied after a couple of trial competitions). Unless the problem is not connected with motor or battery this competitor is now out of the competition.
5) A landing area to be defined whithin a clear view of the competitors and so placed that no one need overfly the flight line. Area should be of reasonable size for the conditions but not to exceed (say) 500 sq metres (25m circle - ed.) Landing inside the area gains (say) 10% of the flight time. No one to enter the area for the purposes of retrieval until the round (heat) has ended.
6) unlimited use of motor but it must be used twice in a flight for a minimum of 15 sec (say) each run. If the motor will not complete the run time the flight is to be terminated immediately and no further rounds can be flown by that competitor.
7) Any tie to be determined by flyoff with motors run (say) 15 sec every 2 min until all but one competitor is eliminated

Electric competition Part 2

To continue on from my last blog on the subject. I believe that this is primarily a gliding competition so I propose that:

1) There only be one motor run allowed, the flight time to start when the motor stops.

2) A reasonable period should be allowed for the weaker planes to get to height so I propose a 7min working time for a 6 min flight. Timing stops when the working time expires and no landing points are given if you are not on the ground before the end of working time.

3) Points are to be given for landing but to avoid damage to motors these should only have a smallish value, 20 points 0-5m, 15 points, 5-10m and 5 points 10-15m. We have plenty of tapes, so each pilot will have his own tape. The tape will be laid out down wind, the pilot will stand 3 m up wind of the 0 point of the tape. This will be his launch point. When landing the tape can be moved to measure the landing point from the zero (staked) point. The measurement point is the nose of the fuselage whatever the orientation of the plane when at rest. There will be a spacing of at least 10m between pilots. To discourage over flying no landing points if the plane lands past the zero point in the direction of the competitiors

In order to better control the height achieved during the motor run a height limiting switch would be ideal. I am getting one of these soon. This will be the cheaper version of what John Rawlins has and will cost about $70.

Electric Competition

There has been a discussion about getting a competition going for 2m foamies, Radians, Easy Gliders and Easy Fly's are currently available and owned by club members. I think just about everyone likes these planes because of their good performance relative to their cost and some crash protection through using EPP foam in the construction.
Many clubs both here and overseas have comps for this class of plane but the rules vary and we want to come up with a simple set of rules that will result in a level playing field. This is because although similar the planes are not identical and the Easy Fly in particular has a weaker motor than the other two. The Radian is also Rudder/Elevator/Motor and the Easy Fly and the Easy Glider Pro have ailerons as well.
The first rule that comes to mind is that the number of channels in use should be limited to three, one of these being motor. The other two would then be rudder/elevator or ailerons/elevator. In the latter case the ailerons would have to be worked off one channel, i.e a single aileron servo or a Y lead from a single channel to two servos. I have tried my Easy Fly with both systems and it flies best with aileron/elevator but with mechanical differential built in, via an angled servo horn, this allows more up aileron than down purely through the linkage geometry.
So, all the gliders can be made to fly with the same number of channels being used (3)
The space on these blogs is limited, so I will continue with the next rule on a separate entry.

Armidale

The 30th Armidale Sailplane Expo has come and gone. It was big, with probably 70 competitors in the various glider and electric events. There was a class for nostalgic gliders this year and I think a 30 year old glider won it with a considerably older guider. The actual winner of RES was Rebecca Richards but a Super Ava does not constitute a member of the nostalgia class with its carbon capped ribs and carbon spar and TE. She flew well though, as she always does.
There were 46 in open thermal with, for the first time probably, 2 ladies competing, Rebecca Richards, who most of us know and Carolyn Michael (who built and flies a Long EZ)
Brian and I had varing results through the three days, I started on a high and had 4 diasterous rounds at the end dropping me from 4th to 16th. Brian did the opposite, starting slowly but ending on a high with a slope soaring flight on a small hill about 600m down wind of the field. He came in 19th after being in the 20's during days 1 and 2. Carl Srautins won, as was probably expected, I think he could have won open with a Spirit. He won using a 300m winch line when almost all the rest of us were using 400m lines!

Claytons Cup Round 2

The Claytons round 2 was held on Sunday 17th Jan with a good turnup of 11 members. The forecast was a bit unsure of itself but with the promise of a southerly coming sometime in the day with strengthening westerlies before that. When we started the wind was North West and very light and stayed that way until late in the competiton when it strengthened. CD Ray Oehme put a time limit of 9am to 12pm to try to avoid the strengthening winds and said that everyone could fly the tasks (2,3,4,5,6 min) in any order and at any time. Most got going straight away only to find the lift light and fluky. I flew my "Milesbore" which weighs only 600 gm and this just floated around in the light air for a 5.59 first flight on its first comp outing. Other people were doing just as well and it looked like being a close competition. Towards the end of the competition a few fliers were caught out by the strong winds and lack of winches (a lot of people had put their winches away and then the old club winch threw a tangle that proved difficult to sort out). In the end most people had a good day and are looking forward to the next round on the 28th Feb. Many thanks to Ray for running a smooth operation.
The results are below, poor Richard had a wing break on launch and Ron and Col each missed one of their flights due to winch availability at the end of the comp. Lyn Oaten did really well.
Results
1) Brian Lindsay 1195 pts (only 5 pts from a perfact score!)
2) Steve Truscott 1175 pts)
3) Paul Gibson 1172 pts
4) Lyn Oaten 1110 pts (well done Lyn !)
5) John Tidey 1069 pts
6) John Quigley 982 pts
7) John Rawlins 954 pts
8) Ron Gett 910 pts
9) Ray Oehme 896 pts
10) Col Armitage 734 pts
11) Richard Aurich 352 pts

First Blog

Hello,
This is the third or fourth time I have tried to do this, so please bear with me if I sound jaded, new stuff takes time to learn.
Firstly I would like to wish everyone a Happy Christmas and a 2010 full of fun and flying.

Competitions

We have a couple of dates pancilled in. On Sunday 21st Feb we were going to hold a 2m 2 Channel man on man competition using modified Australian Thermal rules and winch launching. Up to now we have only had a few indications of interest, so if you would like to fly in such a competition, please contact either myself at piglytoo@gmail.com or Brian at lindsayracing@optusnet.com.au. If we do not hold a 2m glider competition there seems more interest in a 2m foamy electric glider competition. Few people in the club seemed interested in paying $150 for a height limiting switch (althought they are now available at $75) so we are still in discussion about the rules for the comp.
The other competition is a repeat of our successful open competition. This has been proposed for the October long weekend, with a start on Saturday 2nd Oct. and running through to Sunday 3rd. It is a long way off but you know how time flies.

In the next blog - care of winch lines.
Cheers,
Paul
